ABOUT

The KuneKune pig (pronounced Cooney-Cooney) is a breed of pig that was near extinction.  KuneKune in the Maori language means "fat and round".  They were "rediscovered" near the Maori Islands of New Zealand in the late 1970's and a KuneKune conservation program was established.   It was estimated that there were less than 50 purebred KuneKunes left in New Zealand at the time.  Two gentlemen named John Simister and Michael Willis single-handedly saved this breed from extinction.

The first importation of KuneKunes from New Zealand to the UK was in 1992 and from the UK to the United States in 1996.  KuneKune pigs are known for the extremely docile personality and have shorter, upturned snouts which make them wonderful grazing pigs and less prone to root.
